I was first introduced to the relief series when my family and I visited the David Hayes Sculpture Fields. Affectionately known as Stonewalls. I did see this series of sculptures on that visit, but none were really displayed except 2 relief sculptures on the shed attached to the house. There just wasn’t any wall space for them. Most of the relief sculptures were stacked on two sides of the barn or stored in the “Boneyard.”

After a few months of volunteering at the sculpture fields, we were preparing for filming of the PBS special Legacy List about the fields and David’s work. I wanted to surprise David (the son) with a quick restoration of a black relief to be hung on the barn. From that point on, I was hooked on this series.

The next summer I restored 2 of the polychrome, linear relief sculptures. Very large in scale. These 3 restorations became the catalyst for a conversation with David (the son) to begin working on a show of just relief sculptures. Over the next 2 years I began collecting, restoring, cleaning, and searching for items for a show. Learning along the way, I discovered a lot about this series and was finding different pieces all the way up to the installation of the show. This show spans 3 decades of his relief work. I believe I have put together a comprehensive show of this series from gouache paintings, maquettes, and the final pieces. I also assembled varying styles of reliefs where David used different materials bronze castings, plaster, wood, brass and steel.

There are a few aspects that I like about this series are: David opened up his color palette, adding in other colors outside of the rustoleum brand, how he assembled the layers, with either rods, angle iron or flat iron and lastly that the designs are the culmination of the shapes and forms that define his work.

There is always a first time for everything. I am not formally educated in the arts. One class in college. I am not a curator. However, I am a person that has become very familiar with David Hayes art through my 3 plus years of volunteering at the sculpture fields. I hope that this exhibit displays my knowledge and interest in this series.
